In part thirteen of this series we looked at Saver range offers in terms of benefits. Now we look at the Classic Saver in terms of cost and where it fits in.
The difference between the more comprehensive plans and the Saver range
There are quite a few differences but if you had to boil it down to one major difference, it has to be the above threshold benefit.
- The Executive plan has no self-payment gap and an unlimited above threshold benefit
- The Comprehensive range has a self-payment gap and an unlimited above threshold benefit
- The Priority range has a self-payment gap and a limited above threshold benefit
- The Saver range has no self payment gap and no above threshold benefit
The Classic Saver Plan
This plan is the most expensive of all the Saver options offering a couple of benefit that none of the other Saver options offers. You can read about that in part thirteen.
It also offers the largest Medical Savings Account (MSA) of the range.
Let’s start off with the cost:
- Main member – R2, 577 monthly
- Adult dependants – R2, 029 per person
- Children – R1, 031 (A maximum of three children are charged for so this could cost a maximum of R3, 093)
This gives us the following MSA for the year:
- Main member – R7, 728
- Adult dependants – R6, 084 per person
- Children – R3, 084 (A maximum of three children are used in this calculation so this could end up as R9, 252)
Word of warning:
Think of it as a line of credit. If you join halfway through the year, then you get half the amount. If you decide to leave Discovery Health halfway through the year – and in between you’ve used up all of your MSA – then you’ll have to pay back half of the MSA allocated to you.
Here’s how the cost compares to Classic Priority:
Classic Priority | Classic Saver | Difference
Main member | R2, 968 | R2, 577 | R391 |
MSA | R8, 904 | R7, 728 | R1, 176 |
Annual Threshold | R13, 150
Self-payment gap | R4, 246
Limited Above Threshold benefit | R11, 150
Total day-to-day available | R20, 054 | R7, 728 | R12, 326 |
Look, if you’re someone who regularly dips into the above threshold benefit, then the Classic Priority makes a lot of sense. You’re paying an extra R391 a month, but for that you’re getting R20, 054 for day-to-day expenses versus the Classic Saver where you’re getting R7, 728 for the same thing.
